I liked this post the first time I read it, but it didn't impact me like tonight when I re-read it. I have been running pretty consistently over the course of 2011. Though the routes have stayed the same, my effort has changed recently. I have started noticing that my pace has quickened a bit as my endurance has increased. Attempting to keep this pace up during the duration of my run has been challenging to say the least and "strain to gain" couldn't be more appropriate to describe the challenge I am facing in doing it. I hope that I am able to come out on top and wish you best of luck in all of the "strain to gain" challenges in your life.

Maybe all we need to do is redifine what "failure" is. If you are inventing the light bulb, failure is not getting it right first time (or the 99th time), failure is giving up. If you want to loose weight is failure not changing anything in your life or only loosing 1kg in your first week? Maybe by defining failure and success before we start we can really known when we've succeeded and can celebrate the whole process.

Congrats on the success you've achieved with the Paleo diet thus far- you can definitely tell a difference in the before and after pics. I had gotten the impression that you had lost weight, but I love how you have experienced positive effects of the diet change in other areas, most notably improved sleep and faster recovery from exercise. Thanks for being an inspiration and hopefully I can have a similar success story to yours!

EXACTLY! Foods high in refined sugar, like soda and candy and pasta, spike insulin -- and keep it elevated for a long time.
Refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup and their offspring soda pop are one of the key reasons for the explosion of obesity.

I never had tons of treats around the house when I was growing up but I drank tons of coke and had access to tons of coke.

Plus the combination of massive amounts of sugar then cause your body to store all the fat you eat so even though fat is not nearly as bad as we once thought, the combination of heaps of sugar turns the fat into a timebomb.
